India’s first and only female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi will feature in Channel New Asia’s landmark 4-part series, ASIAN CENTURY (premiering Tuesday, 7th Nov) featuring pivotal events that have shaped the Asian Century.

In Episode Two – India’s Iron Lady Tuesday, 14 Nov 2017: Few leaders have left a bigger political legacy than India’s first and only female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Her brutal assassination in 1984 by her Sikh bodyguards brought to a bloody end the life of an Indian political giant whose impact reached far beyond her nation’s shores.
CNA will reveal the powerful mix of political ruthlessness and visionary reform that built Indira Gandhi’s formidable reputation, not only nationally but globally. The rollercoaster ride of her two terms as Prime Minister that included war with Pakistan, the State of Emergency, the Golden Temple siege and the creation of Bangladesh are all explored as we unmask the political character and achievements of Indira Gandhi and her monumental influence on the Asian Century.

Meanwhile in Episode Four, Bangladesh will be featured under “The Bangladesh Solution: A Nation Torn Tuesday, 28 Nov 2017”. – The rise of Bengali nationalism and the fierce tensions between Muslim and secular forces are tracked as we follow the footsteps of Islamic nationalist leader, Sheik Mujibur Rahman, in his battle to be become the first Prime Minister of an independent Bangladesh in 1971. This is a tale of heroic struggle and horrendous carnage as Pakistan and India go to war over Bengali’s right to run their own lives. The impact, both locally and regionally, of Bangladesh’s fight for independence, which left more than 30 million homeless and a trail of horror and death, still resonates today as we reveal the human and political cost of the fight for an independent Bangladesh.
